The Elkhart County Parks will unveil a marble sculpture in memory of Elisabeth DeFries at the third Annual “In the Garden” juried art show Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
The Victorian marble sculpture which was originally created in Europe, has had its home in various private gardens throughout the past hundred years. The sculpture is of Greek style and features a woman holding an urn. The piece is 4 feet high and weighs almost 1,000 pounds.
The art is being installed in the mid-summer area of the Calendar Garden, which is located adjacent to DeFries’ birth date. DeFries, who passed away this past December, was the founder of the DeFries Gardens located in the heart of the River Preserve County Park.
DeFries and her husband Dr. John DeFries lived at the site for more than 50 years, and in 1995, she donated her late 19th century brick farmhouse and 13 acres to the Elkhart County Parks.
The antique piece of art work was chosen in her honor based upon her love of re-using vintage and antique items, love of traveling to Europe to visit many other gardens, appreciation of art and culture, and her strong connections to the environment.
The show hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $3 per person, 12 and younger enter free. Shuttle parking is available from New Paris Elementary School. Visit www.elkhartcountyparks.org for more information.
