On Saturday, youth group members from East Goshen Mennonite Church will hold an auction to raise funds for a service trip to Harlan, Ky.
The youth will spend a week in Harlan working to maintain and renovate the homes of low-income and disadvantaged residents there. They will work with the non-profit organization Sharing with Appalachian People.
Each youth group member, all of which are students at Elkhart County high schools, has donated one baked good, another item and a service for the auction. Dozens of other items and services have been donated by church members and local businesses.
“I’m looking forward to being able to lend a hand to people in need and help make a difference,” said Heath Gerber, a Goshen High School junior. “Sitting at home playing video games can be fun, but this is definitely more rewarding.”
Youth Pastor Merle Hostetler said the week is a good time for youth to put their faith into action,.
“Our youth will be challenged to confront Christ’s call to care for the ‘least of these,’” Hostetler said.
Items and services donated include a gift certificate from Dan Steiner of New Horizons Aviation for one free discovery flight to the auction.
“It’s great to see youth who take time out of their summer vacations to help,” Steiner said.
Other items include handmade wooden furniture, a quilted wall hanging, ceramic bowls, bicycle repair, guided fishing trips, an oil change and tire rotation, a knotted baby blanket, lawn mower maintenance, babysitting, a 32-inch LCD TV and many more. Baked goods will be donated, including a ground cherry pie, whoopee pies, apple dumplings, cinnamon rolls, cheesecake, homemade bread, maple syrup and an authentic Laotian meal for four.
