She'll be running for Nolan Lawson

GOSHEN —

Nolan Lawson was famous for making his "rock on" sign — middle two fingers folded down, index and pinkie raised. On Sept. 18 and Oct. 10, Nolan’s favorite sign will adorn the T-shirt of Middlebury Elementary School nurse Michelle Miller as she runs in his honor.

Lawson was a third grader at the school when he died Jan. 14 from heart complications. Miller, who has completed 14 marathons, decided to participate as a charity runner in the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 10 and honor Nolan’s memory by giving the donations she raises accompanied by her husband, Dewayne, and as many people as she can gather, will run seven 3-mile loops starting at Krider Gardens.

She will leave from Krider Gardens at 7:30 a.m. and every three miles, will swing by the starting point again and pick up any runners who want to join at any time. The loops will include Nolan’s family home, where a water table will be set up.

"They can run, they can walk, they can bring their dogs — families can come," Miller said.

A suggested donation to run is $5 per mile, but Miller is not keeping track of who pays.

"Anyone can come to help honor Nolan’s memory," she said. "I think it is important to let David and Keli (Nolan’s parents) know that we all still think about him often and miss him."

No registration is necessary for the Sept. 18 event and donations can be made on site at Krider Gardens, where a board will be set up counting down the loops. T-shirts with the "rock on" hand signal will be available for sale for $12 if supplies last. Miller’s fund-raising goal is $1,000.

For more information, call Miller at 825-4951.
