ELKHART —
At 8:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day, hundreds of runners and walkers will gather at the starting line for the fourth annual Turkey Stampede footrace.
The event will take place in McNaughton Park, 701 Arcade Ave., Elkhart, which is behind Elkhart General Hospital, and includes a 10K run, 5K run or walk and a 1-mile walk. The 10K course takes a lap around downtown Elkhart, the 5K course makes it way around historic Strong Avenue neighborhood and the 1-mile walk is a walk in the park with a jaunt around a nearby block.
One unique aspect of this race is the menu pricing. Participants can opt to register for any event for $12 before Monday and $15 on site. Anyone who wants to be chip timed will pay an additional $3 and if they want a long-sleeved technical shirt, it will cost an additional $15 (only while supplies last).
In the 5K race, runners can try to Catch the Turkey (also known as Ryan Greutman) to win a $25 prize, payable to the first man and woman who can catch him.
Refreshments are available after the race, and all participants get a participation ribbon, but there is no official awards ceremony.
Mike Perez, development director at Faith Mission, calls it “a family event for a family day. We really enjoy having the community gather for a short time in the morning. We know people need to get back home to their festivities, but it is a great way to start the day. We have so many groups because there is a distance for everyone and it is something fun to do with company and your family.”
