Fish fry fundraiser helps LaGrange police units

LaGRANGE — LaGrange Sheriff Department Deputy, Aaron Knisley and his K-9 partner, a pretty little lab named Kayla, were center stage at the fish fry held Friday night at the LaGrange County Fairgrounds.

“We did extremely well in the pre-event ticket sales,” Knisley said. “I see lots of people buying tickets at the door, and many people took tickets with them to sell for us. The combined totals, I’d guess at well over 1,000.”

According to Knisley, the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department has 19 full-time deputies and eight reserve officers. Every year the reserve officers get a budget of $3,000 from which they have to cover expenses for all their equipment. In order to cover their economic shortfalls,the reservists have annual fundraising events. The K-9 corps has separate expenses and their funds need augmenting as well. The result is the popular fish and tenderloin dinner. Extra raffle tickets were sold for chances on a hand gun, a canoe trip, and two rifles.

At 6 p.m., officers from the State Police, county and town K-9 corps held a demonstration on the lawn next to the fair building. Knisley and Kayla; Brian Emlander and Tyson; Tony Clark and Esko; Ryan Kauffman and Titan; and Mike Carroll and Deezle, all went through their paces for the crowd.

The dogs demonstrated their ability to sniff out drugs, pursue unruly suspects and obey orders under distracting circumstances. After their show, the dogs were greeted and petted enthusiastically by the many children watching the obedience demonstration.
