GOSHEN —
Volunteers worked Wednesday to plant three rain gardens at Maple City Health Care Center, Middlebury Street, Goshen. The rain gardens, which collect water during storms and use it to grow the plants, were designed by master naturalists Ed Farmwald and Karen Fairfield.
Eric Kurtz, of the Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District, helped Maple City Health Care receive a grant for the project.
“Stormwater runoff is one of the biggest causes of stream pollution,” Kurtz said. “The more rain gardens we create, the cleaner our rivers and streams will be.”
Nayla Jimenez Cabezas, general manager of the health center, said the plants chosen for the gardens are native to Indiana.
“Because we are a health center, we also chose plants that had some connection to medicine,” she said. “Some of the plants were used by Native Americans. Some of the plants still have medicinal uses.”
