No one injured in plane crash

ELKHART — The third time wasn’t the charm for a Luscombe 8F plane landing Wednesday morning.

The pilot, Steven Lesher of Elkhart, and his copilot, Roy Marchant, tipped the plane around 11:20 a.m. after hitting a snowbank on the runway of Mishawaka Pilots Club Airport, 29580 C.R. 20, between C.R. 1 and C.R. 3. in Baugo Township.

“I was practicing landings and stuck two of them in there and the third one wasn’t very pleasant,” Lesher said. “It’s just one of those things that happened. It got in the snow and...ended up on our back. It’s not a common thing but (it) can happen.”

Fortunately the pair aboard the small craft built in 1948 didn’t sustain any injuries, but the ego to the longtime pilot was injured.

“I’m not hurt, just my pride,” Lesher said, who’s been flying since 1967 when he got his license in high school. “I’ve been flying off and on since then depending on my financial situation.”

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Lt. Travis Adamson said he Federal Aviation Administration will be called in to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Lesher said the airplane has some damage and that he’s “looking at some major dollars (in repairs). It’s not cheap,” “I will be flying again once I get it fixed,” Lesher continued. “It’s a sweet-flying airplane and we’ll get it back up in the air once it gets fixed.”
