Goshen girl an Alabama fan in ND territory

GOSHEN — It’s not easy being an Alabama fan in a sea of Notre Dame blue and gold.

Just ask Goshen High School sophomore Gale Immel.

Immel, an athlete at Goshen, has been a Crimson Tide fan for several years. She became a fan of the team while on a spring break trip to the South with her family.

This did not sit all that well with her father, Chris, a former Goshen assistant football coach — and Notre Dame fan.

The situation has led to some good-natured teasing at the Immel household.

“My dad’s always given me some grief about it, but it’s been even worse this year,” Immel said.

Immel’s Tide gear collection includes some jerseys and accessories for her golf bag.

In addition to the Notre Dame fans in the house, Immel also has to contend with a younger brother, Jack, 12, who is an Oregon fan.

But for this week, Jack has become — wait for it — a Notre Dame fan, donning a Manti Te’o jersey and posing for a photo with his older sister.

As for Immel’s game-watching plans? She’s had to outsource those a bit.

“My dad told me I wasn’t allowed to watch the game here unless I was going to root for Notre Dame,” Immel said with a laugh.

So she will be headed over to her grandparents’ house to root for her beloved Crimson Tide.

As for the $64,000 question: Who’s going to win the BCS National Championship Game this Monday night when all the hype comes to an end and the two teams finally take to the field at Sun Life Stadium in Miami?

Immel doesn’t buy into the oddmakers’ prediction that the Crimson Tide will win by 10 points or more.

“I think it’s going to be closer than that,” Immel said. “The Notre Dame defense is very good.”
