Walorski stops in Goshen on district tour

GOSHEN —  Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, R-Elkhart, attended the grand opening of the IU Health Goshen Heart and Vascular Center Wednesday as a part of her tour through District 2 this week.

Walorski commended the teamwork of outstanding groups, from the Goshen Chamber of Commerce to the cardiologists at IU Health Goshen, to share the vision of improving health care for Hoosier families.

The congresswoman said she’s been on the road talking with constituents from morning to night because the district is two hours in length.

“I love being in the district. We’ve been meeting with folks and interacting with people,” she said, smiling. The office in Mishawaka has been up and running and has been “swamped.”

She said events like the grand opening of the heart center are important in relation to healthcare.

“Events like this are paramount. We talk about healthcare at the federal level and we’re talking about innovative approaches at the local level,” Walorski said, “and there’s no better way than to listen to the innovative approach and innovative state-of-art healthcare. I would love to sit down and talk with Dr. (Mark) Smucker(medical director). The more chances and options to provide Hoosiers with better healthcare, that’s what we need.”

She said it’s not solid government but partnership where innovation comes alongside a community to provide long-term healthcare.

“And there’s no greater place than in Elkhart County in the land of innovation,” Walorski said.

The congresswoman said she’s serving on two committees, Armed Services Committee and Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, that historically have been bipartisan committees to pass legislation.

“I have such a great love for veterans and the military in our country,” she said. “There are 52,000 veterans and their families in the second district. We have vested interest and a lot be proud of. We need to take care when it comes to military assets and veteran jobs and interests.”

What has it been like working in the Capitol building?

“I have enjoyed every second of it and grateful to there,” Walorski said. “The key I learned while in the Indiana State House was not just promoting good ideas or trying to defeat bad ideas but promoting relationships. A lot of good things are happening.”
