CASA’s Elsie Hummel receives award for service to children

GOSHEN — Elsie Hummel has been named CAPS-Child And Parent Services’ “Marv Yoder Volunteer of the Year.”

Hummel is a retired school teacher from Baugo Community Schools, where she taught math at Jimtown High School for more than 30 years. Hummel has been a Court-Appointed Special Advocate volunteer for more than five years.

CAPS officials stated in a press release that Hummel “is truly dedicated to the children of Elkhart County. She has continually worked on multiple cases at one time. She always attends CASA sponsored events such as the in-service trainings and CASA social events. Elsie is a strong advocate for the children she represents and is not afraid to speak up for the child. She has a heart for children and has dedicated her life to teaching and serving children in Elkhart County.”

Child And Parent Services is a local non-profit agency whose mission is to prevent child abuse by valuing children and strengthening families in Elkhart County. CAPS has seven programs that are aimed at this mission.

CASA is one of those. CAPS describes its CASA volunteers: “A CASA is a Court Appointed Special Advocate.

“CASA volunteers are ordinary people who care about children. They do not need any legal expertise. They come from all backgrounds.

“The Elkhart County Juvenile Magistrate appoints a CASA volunteer to a child involved in a neglect or abuse case. The CASA is trained to work with all individuals involved, advocating for the best interest of the child. The CASA is encouraged to develop a relationship with the child involved. The CASA provides the magistrate with well-rounded, objective information and recommendations. CASA volunteers are a consistent voice for a child who has no voice in court.”
