Returning Marines greeted in Goshen

GOSHEN — Local Marines returning from a 7-month deployment in Afghanistan were greeted in Goshen with banners, waves, salutes and flags Friday afternoon.

At about 1 p.m., a parade of squad cars from Elkhart County and Goshen escorted two buses filled with 50 Marines along U.S. 33 through Goshen to Meijer, where Elkhart police took over from Goshen.

Along the route were some friendly faces, including a contingent of students from St. John the Evangelist Catholic School. The students, lined up along Main Street just north of the Ind. 15/U.S. 33 intersection, displayed banners that read "Thank you." One of the banners spelled out "Thank You" in handprints. The students and teachers waved flags and hands, earning them some honks from the bus drivers.

Several veterans also saluted the buses as they drove past the Veterans of Foreign Wars post along Pike Street.

More information on the Marines' return home will be published later today, after their arrival in South Bend.
