GOSHEN —
The Goshen Clay Artist’s Guild invites the community to join them for the annual Empty Bowl Soup Benefit on Saturday.
For the past 11 years, the Clay Artist’s Guild has coordinated this event. The last couple of years approximately 800 people have attended, some waiting out in the cold for more than an hour.
Once inside, the community is allowed to pick out a hand-made bowl, which is filled with a meal of soup served with bread, a beverage and dessert. At the end, diners take with them their empty bowl as a reminder that there are people in our community who remain hungry and homeless.
The event’s proceeds go to Goshen Interfaith Hospitality Network, which has been providing shelter for homeless families in Goshen since 1995.
“The Empty Bowl Soup Benefit is truly a community endeavor,” said Jess Koscher, Guild member and event coordinator. “Guild members, schools and other local potters donate bowls, restaurants and members make soup, local people lend a hand and the community shows up to wait in line for hours. It really is an amazing thing to see.”
The event occurs at the Goshen Farmer’s Market. Doors open at 4:45 p.m., with soup being served between 5 and 8 p.m. Bowls are first-come, first-serve with the line forming outside Rachel’s Bread.
