The new “Babies & Books” program at the Middlebury Public Library meets on Thursdays at 10 a.m. is for babies up to 18 months old. Babies & Books is designed to foster an enjoyment of words, rhythm and rhyme through age-appropriate activities. It is also open to older siblings who are encouraged to bring along their own “baby” (teddy bear or doll) to participate in the activities.  This program is taught by Mary Gilbert, Youth Services librarian. Let's Talk about it

This fall’s “Let’s Talk About It” series at the library is titled “History by the Numbers.” The first lecture will be on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. and given by Goshen College’s Kyle Schlabach. The featured book will be “1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus” by Charles Mann.

A Friends of the Library book sale is set for Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Children’s programs

‘Mother Goose Monday’

“Mother Goose Monday” is back for a new fall 12-week series through Nov. 26. Today’s session is from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

These learning activities are geared for children from birth through age 2, who attend with their parents or caregivers.  Mother Goose Monday includes rhymes, stories, songs and playtime.

Storytime Express

Storytime Express sessions are set for Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. “Life Skills” will  be the theme again this week, and the stories will deal with respect. Fingerplays or songs and a craft activity are also offered.  This program is free and is recommended for children ages 2 to 5.

‘Crafty Bandits’

The library’s Crafty Bandits will meet Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. Teens will start off this year’s activities by making “Shrinky Dinks.” To find out exactly what those are, check out the YouTube video on the library website, www.goshenpl.lib.in.us. This program is open to young people in grades six through 12. Register for the program at the circulation desk or by calling 533-9531.

Book clubs

Piracy

Wednesday is “Talk Like a Pirate Day” at the Milford library. Every patron visiting the library that day will be given a “gold doubloon.”

Preschool Story Time

Preschool Story Time sessions will begin Sept. 26 at 10:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. or Thursday evenings at 7 starting Sept.  27. The first theme will be “Colors of Fall.” Miss Julie will be reading the book “Orange: Seeing Orange All Around Us, by Sarah L. Schuette and several other stories about fall colors.” Children will go on a scavenger hunt, make a craft and eat a snack.

Science club

The Super Science Saturday Club will begin its 2012-2013 season with an off-site rocket launch this coming Saturday. Children will meet at the Library at 10 a.m. to learn rocket design basics and build their own model rockets. Transportation to the launch site will need to be provided by a parent or guardian.
