Board OKs plan to relocate city garage

GOSHEN — City officials are moving ahead with plans to purchase and renovate a building on Steury Avenue that will eventually serve as the new central garage.

The Board of Public Works and Safety signed off on plans to purchase the property at 320 S. Steury Avenue for $190,000.

Mayor Allan Kauffman said the city will pay for half of cost with money from the Economic Development Income Tax Fund and the other half will come from the Cumulative Capital Fund.

City Council members will consider the plan at tonight’s council meeting.

The city employees want to relocate the central garage because the existing facility on North Fifth Street is considered too small and sits on a well field.

The existing building is used as a warehouse and is part of K&W Electric Inc., whose owner has expressed a desire to sell the land.

A tentative agreement has already been reached with Kevin and Christine Wagner to sell the land, according to paperwork provided by the board.

The central garage is used for mechanical repairs of all city equipment, ranging from Weed Eaters to vehicles.

In other matters, the board:

• Approved plans by former fire chief John Alheim to retire. He currently works as an inspector for the fire department. He plans to retire June 1. The board, including the mayor, thanked him for 42 years of service.

• Awarded a bid to Omni Source to purchase old brass meters that are being replaced by the city. The value of the meters was estimated to be about $36,000.

• Approved a $2,145 increase in the cost of the upcoming construction of the pedestrian tunnel at Goshen College. The proposed tunnel under the railroad tracks will be constructed on July 4. The estimated cost rose as a result of the need to have a temporarily utility line established during construction. Total cost of the project is estimated to be $1.6 million, all of which will be paid through grant money.
