GOSHEN —
The Goshen College student-run radio station, 91.1 The Globe, won a national radio award at a conference in New York City Saturday.
The station won The Abraham and Borst “Best College Radio Station” award during the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System conference.
According to station manager Jason Samuel, the Globe became a finalist for the award after winning the station’s category for best college/university station under 10,000 enrollment.
The station then became a finalist for the overall award along with stations from DePaul University and William Patterson University, which won categories for best online streaming-only station and best station over 10,000 enrollment, respectively.
Samuel credits the GC students’ hard work for the award.
“Their goal is to pursue excellence and maintain a level of quality above what typical college radio stations accomplish,” he said.
Samuel said in addition to the best station award, students won six national awards and were finalists in 20 different categories.
According to Samuel, the station’s aim to serve listeners outside of just the students at the college allowed them to win this award.
“We care deeply about the greater Goshen community,” he said. “Our audience is bigger than the students at the college.”
The station previously won the award in 2011.
