GOSHEN —
Sunday was a great night for Eli Manning in Indianapolis, but it was a super night for The Wings at one bar in Goshen.
Goshenites joined the American obsession in gobbling up chicken wings at a phenomenal rate on Super Bowl Sunday, and Buffalo Wild Wings on U.S. 33 certainly seemed to feed the addiction.
Nationally, an estimated 1.25 billion wings were expected to be consumed on Game Day.
By game time, store officials estimated they helped tempt the pallets of plenty of private gatherings in the area with takeout orders. Even before the sun rose Sunday morning, management had a good hunch Sunday’s sales would likely be a highlight for the store’s annual bottom line.
“We had probably over a thousand (wings) pre-ordered,” said Bethany Keuper, general manager for Buffalo Wild Wings. “We were taking five or six orders every 15 minutes.”
Plenty of sports fans gobbled up the appetizers inside the restaurant as well. By kickoff time, the bar was nearly full with fans watching on several big screens and other selected smaller screens.
For Roxanne Scarlett of Bristol, the need to pick up some dog food seemed like a good enough reason to stop by BW’s.
She sauntered up to the bar for a tall, dark beer and had her eyes glued to the wide-screen behind the bar as the game began.
“I was out shopping and wanted to catch the beginning of the game,” Scarlett said.
She was among many who were rooting for the Giants because of the Colts connection via Peyton Manning, the Indianapolis Colts legendary quarterback.
She was hoping for a Giants victory “Because Eli Manning is Peyton’s brother and it feels a little closer to home,” she said.
Next to her was Chris Betts, 49, of Grand Rapids, who was in town on business. He works for a promotional company that caters to car dealers.
Betts finds himself traveling more than 40 weeks out of the year, so Sunday’s decision was easy.
“When I’m out of town and I wanna watch football, I always go to BW’s. Big screen TVs. It’s better than sitting in my hotel room,” Betts said as bartender Lisa Hoogenboom moved non-stop in front of him in an effort to keep up with orders from servers and customers along the bar.
Betts sat almost directly in front of the big screen behind the bar.
“It’s not a bad view,” Betts added.
With his roots in Michigan, Betts said, he was cheering for the Patriots because quarterback Tom Brady played his college football for the University of Michigan.
Behind Betts was a table of two men and five women. Sunday’s trip to BW’s marked the second consecutive year the group chose BW’s and they were even able to get the same table.
Tara Conrad of Goshen said she was pulling for Brady and the Patriots. “He’s gorgeous,” she said.
Her friend Mary Nichols was rooting for the Giants because of the Manning Factor.
And then there was Erica Chilberg, of Elkhart, who seemed more interested in the social environment.
“I don’t even know who’s playing,” Chilberg said.
