GOSHEN —
Dr. Ann Hoff, who specializes in internal medicine, recently joined Maple City Health Care Center.
Dr. Hoff will help Maple City Health Care Center accomplish its mission to foster healthy community by providing and promoting health care that is affordable, accessible and integrated.
Dr. Hoff’s primary responsibility will be to diagnose, treat, and prevent illnesses and injuries in teenagers and adults.
Because Maple City Health Care Center serves people in a medically underserved population, many of Dr. Hoff’s patients will be low-income and Hispanic people.
Dr. Hoff earned her medical degree at the Yale University School of Medicine. She completed the Greenwich Hospital/Yale University Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Hoff is board certified in internal medicine.
Before deciding to work at Maple City Health Care Center, Dr. Hoff visited several primary healthcare providers in the area.
“I joined Maple City Health Care Center because the center’s mission and practice is such a good match with what I want to do and with the way I want to practice medicine,” Dr. Hoff explained. “I want to treat the whole person and help people stay healthy.”
“For me, treating the whole person means offering medical care that is integrated with, for example, social services, nutrition, and counseling.”
Maple City Health Care Center employs a staff counselor, social worker and nutritionist.
“Nutrition is extremely important to a patient’s health,” Dr. Hoff said, “and it’s great that we have the resources to help empower people to improve their own health. It really makes a difference.”
“I also appreciate the way that Maple City Health Care Center focuses on community health rather than on just the health of individuals,” Dr. Hoff said.
“One example is the center’s garden club. The garden club involves the whole neighborhood. Children and adults who help in the gardens get exercise and they learn how to grow and preserve healthy food. Neighbors learn to know each other and share healthy recipes.”
Another reason Dr. Hoff decided to join Maple City Health Care Center’s two other physicians is the center’s commitment to reducing barriers to health care.
“I like that our center has a sliding discount to make health care affordable,” Dr. Hoff said. “I like that we offer health care in both Spanish and English and that we are located within walking distance of the perimeter of our service area.”
Dr. Hoff had a few surprises in her first weeks of working at the center.
“Several of my current patients were injured working in area factories and then abandoned by the companies,” Dr Hoff said. “I’m glad that we are able to help these people who had nowhere else to turn.”
“Sometimes people who have had misfortunes or who have been mistreated are wary and angry. But I’ve found our patients to be friendly, welcoming and appreciative of our care.”
Maple City Health Care Center serves 2,500 people each year.
Last year, the center received the Premier Health Award from the Indiana Public Health Foundation for “exceptional contribution to preventative medicine and public health.”
