Northridge band gets back to basics with ‘Genesis’ production

MIDDLEBURY —

"Genesis" will take the Northridge Raider Marching Band back to the beginning.

The band will be performing what director Brad Zook calls a more basic marching band show than in years past.

"The music will be more difficult this year," he said. "It is a style called primitivism and has very harsh harmonies."

The band will play "The Rite of Spring" by Igor Stravinsky, and the show is about the discoveries of early man. The show is very different than the comedy show in 2009.

"The students like that we do different things every year," Zook said.

The students are being challenged more musically, but he said the season is going along more smoothly than last year.

"We have a large freshman class but they are picking it up quick even though there are a lot of them," he said.

The band has improved overall and the color guard is larger, which will help visual scores at competitions, he said.

"Our goal is to be the best we can be," Zook said. "We want to have excellent, focused rehearsals and try to improve what we did last year."

Band size: 122
