Nappanee man dies from war injuries

NAPPANEE, Ind. — A Nappanee man died May 10 from injuries sustained while serving in Iraq.

Army Staff Sgt. James P. Snyder, 48, formerly of Syracuse, died in Columbus, Ga., from his injuries.

A spokesman for the Department of Defense was unable to provide information Saturday night about how Snyder sustained injuries.

According to information provided by Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Snyder was recently stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. He previously served in the Gulf War and was in his third tour of duty in Iraq.

James P. Snyder, 48, a staff sergeant with the Army, died May 10 of injuries he suffered while serving his third tour in Iraq.

The Nappanee and former Syracuse resident was born Dec. 10, 1959, in Columbus, Ga., to Maurice and Donna (Rockwell) Snyder.

He married Christine Hochstetler.

He was a lifetime local resident and was on active duty and stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. He had previously served in the Gulf War. Snyder attended Brethren in Christ Church in Nappanee.

Surviving along with his wife are three children, Douglas, Karlene and Joseph Snyder, all at home; his mother, Donna Snyder, North Webster; three brothers, David Snyder, LaPorte, Daniel Snyder, Indianapolis, and Paul Snyder, Portage; and three sisters, Lorree Corbat, Syracuse, Laura Keller, Fort Wayne, and Neva O’Connor, North Webster.

He was preceded in death by his father, Maurice Snyder.

Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse.

A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the Revs. Joseph Fox and Jeff Williams officiating.

Burial with full military honors will be in Syracuse Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to The Logan Center in South Bend.
