TOPEKA, Ind. — Five sealed bids for street paving were read and three price quotes for roofing work were reviewed by the Topeka Town Council, which met Monday.
The five bids for paving a section of Yoder Street ranged from $55,000 to nearly $99,000 and were referred to engineers with DLZ for their study and recommendation.
The bidders and their bids are Rieth-Riley, Goshen, $98,898; Brooks, Fort Wayne, $89,701.50; Niblock, Bristol, $77,253; API Construction, Laotto, $68,826; and Pulver Asphalt Paving, $55,562.50.
Three quotes were received for replacing the roof on the town hall building. The low price of $7,376 from Double H Roofing, Millersburg, was accepted. A contract will be drawn up with the firm.
Property auction
Town attorney Bill Eberhard reviewed specificiations for the plan to auction the former Sleeper property and the house on the property, located on the north side of town, this summer.
The Sleeper family and a financial institution signed over deeds to the property to town officials recently and the town council plans to sell it to someone who wants to repair the house or raze it and replace it.
Eberhard said the council must have a public hearing July 14 to announce its intentions to auction the property.
Then the auction will be set at 4:30 p.m. Aug. 11 after the regular council meeting.
“We’ll have a little auction that evening,” said councilman Dallas Martin.
The requirements include having the buyer remove the house within 30 days of purchase or securing it and begin repairs within 60 days. Repairs should be complete in 240 days, according to the rules.
July 4 fireworks
After receiving a request from the Chamber of Commerce for financial help with the July 4 fireworks, council members voted to give $3,000 toward the project.
Clerk-Treasurer DeWayne Bontrager said the town’s promotion fund was at $6,700 before the donation was approved.
Jason Boggs, ordinance enforcer, said a property has been mowed on East Pine Street and he has his sights on a lot on Indiana, which will be on the July 4 parade route.
The council planned to have an executive session Thursday at 4 p.m. to discuss personnel issues.
The next regular council meeting will be July 14.
