The third annual Celebrating the Arts Street Festival will take place Saturday in uptown Syracuse, along Main Street, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
More than 50 art vendors, with specialties in photography, watercolor, jewelry, pottery, painted furniture, purses and a variety of art mediums will be on hand selling their art.
Live music will be on the street featuring local musicians John Kirkwood and Total Recall, plus the Ladybirds from Louisville, Ky.
Violin and guitar students from The Creative Fish Gallery and Workshop, sponsor of the festival, will perform a mini recital under direction of Sean Hoffman.
DownUnder Bar and Grill, which is located in the center of the activities, will host an outdoor Beer Garden featuring prime rib sandwiches and other food. Another food booth, “Jason’s,” will provide early morning coffee and doughnuts and also lunch.
A free art activity for children involving squirt painting on paper will also be a part of the festivities.
New this year is a “Paint Your Own Pottery” tent, where people can purchase unfinished pottery to paint, and a place to design and make a wrist keychain.
Local artists will offer handmade soup bowls and handmade cappuccino mugs, which include chili and cappuccino. The bowls and mugs have been donated and the funds raised will go toward scholarships for art students’ college educations.
Last year two students were presented with scholarships with funds from the festival and other events sponsored throughout the year by Creative Fish. Those students are Emily Leismer, who attends Indiana Wesleyan, and Dane Smith, who is at Savannah School of Art and Design.
Ballroom Dance
The public is invited to attend a “Night in Shangri-La” ballroom dance Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the North Webster Community Center, 301 N. Main St.
Live music will be provided by Wayne & Laurie and the cost is $10 per person at the door. This event is sponsored by the Warsaw Ballroom Dance Association. For more information, call 269-2287.
Waterfowl workshop
A free waterfowl hunting workshop and clay bird shoot will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 4 at the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area near North Webster. This event is free, but early registration is encouraged.
The workshop will be instructed by Indiana conservation officers and a Department of Natural Resources biologist, who will cover the history of waterfowl hunting, identifying waterfowl, decoy layout and blind placement, waterfowl regulations and waterfowl foods.
Attendees should take their shotguns and ammunition to take part in the clay bird shoot. For more information and to register, call 457-8092.
