Goshen track team to make run for conference crown
Increasing numbers was the first step.
Now fourth-year Goshen High School boys track and field coach Brock Maust is anxious to see if the Redskins are ready to take the next step, which is improved quality.
“We are definitely ready to try to stand out in the Northern Lakes Conference,” the coach said. “That is what we fight for. That is our goal. It’s time for us to take on the leaders.”
There are 82 Redskins on the 2009 roster ready to begin outdoor competition Thursday with a home meet against Lakeland at Foreman Field.
“We had 140 come out, but had to make cuts,” Maust said.
Nine of the Redskins are letterwinners. Senior returnees are Carmelo Castillo, Thomas Gingrich, Jacob Heiliger, Cameron Miller, Nick Paluchniak and Ross Yeater. Juniors are Bryan Baer and Austin Hodge. Tyler Wynn is a sophomore.
“Six are seniors and that is where your leadership comes from,” Maust said.
“We are off to a good start with a win for the third straight season indoors at Culver. Yeater high jumped 6-3, Gingerich qualified for indoor state in shot put (48-3 1/2), Heiliger pole vaulted 13-0 and the 4 x 800 relay of Miller, Wynn, Castillo and Hodge broke the meet record.
“Miller is ready to lead this team. He is one of the top runners in the NLC. He can run anything from the 400 to the mile.”
Last season, the Redskins took senior Eric Murto to state finals in the 800 meters (finished 15th in 1:58.77). He also teamed with Castillo, Wynn and Miller on the 4 x 800 relay which won the Goshen sectional, placed third in the Kokomo regional and 16th at state (8:11.56).
Others lost to graduation were Daniel Driver, Scott Flory, Nathan Foster, Martin Fuentes, Brock Goodman, Steven Kilmer, Jose Lopez, Juan Medina, Zach Prater and Brandon Slabach.
Seniors on the current roster are Jose Chavez, Juan Diaz, Brandon Hanna, Brant Hartman, Gustavo Hernandez, Jair Hernandez, Josue Hernandez, Eric Kantz, Andrew Krabill, Evan Lantz, Jason Lauver, PJ Metzler, Brandon Newman, Tim Nisley, Caleb Nunez, Clark Warner and Kahler Willits.
Juniors are Robert Andrews, Marcos Campos, Jake Driver, Chris Figueroa, AJ Garcia, Jerson Gutierrez, Ian Irizarry, Vincent Lavaine, Ryan Looker, John Martin, Luis Morales, Austin Neff, Marcus Salchert, Lamarous Schrock and Gage Wiles.
Sophomores are Eddie Chirino, Aaron Culp, Alex Detweiler, Jordan Falin, Aaron Frost, Aaron Krabill, Robby Lehman, Gabe Lepe, Dustin Mast, Allen Murray, Eric Ponce, Tony Pung, Josh Riegsecker, Michael Riegsecker, Charly Ruvalcaba, Travis Sommers, Nathan Swihart, Taylor Truex and Brian Van Hook.
