LIGONIER — At Wednesday’s meeting, Ligonier Board of Works members approved the city’s purchase of concrete for the purpose of preparing bases for three bronze figures being donated to the city.
With the same motion, the board cancelled the proposed bidding process for the bases due to the anticipated arrival of the figures in the city later in June, an earlier date than expected. The bases will be poured by the city water department alongside other concrete work being done by the city.
Mayor Patricia Fisel also announced to the board that the downtown upgrades in the city’s Streetscape Project may end with a different lighting plan. Communication with utility AEP has revealed that some of the current downtown lighting can only be changed if strict requirements for replacement lighting are met. At present, the city will not immediately change the cobra lights in the downtown area. The project, under the administration of Region III-A planning group, will focus on sidewalks, lighting, trees and other ornamental elements in the area from Union Street to the north end of the downtown area along Cavin Street.
Wright updated the board on efforts by the owner of a Lincolnway South property to complete the connection of the property wastewater lines to the city system. A contractor has been hired to complete the connection, which will alleviate a troublesome wastewater backup problem on the property..
Street paving to begin
Streets commission head Mike Burdette told the board that his department is about to begin a program to remove dead trees along city streets before the summer paving program is in full swing. The board approved a bid of $1,650 from Agtree for the removal of 10 trees.
The city paving program, which has been awarded to Niblock Excavating, will begin June 22 or 29. Work is planned on Lincolnway West, two sections of Martin Street, sections of Hagen and Summit, Morten and an alley north of east Miller Street.
Burdette reported that Bridge Street should be open to traffic in about two weeks. A ribbon cutting ceremony for the new bridge and roadway is planned for June 30.
Pigeon Street property
The city council earlier in the week approved the pursuit of appraisals and an offer to purchase a property at 111 Pigeon St. for the purpose of expanding city park space for the River Walk project.
City officials will make an offer not to exceed the average of two appraisals of the property. Council president Ken Schuman will represent the city at the property auction, which will occur during other city business sessions.
Fire Chief Jeremy Weaver reported to the board that funds received from a 2008 grant have finally been released, and will be used by the department for traffic vests, traffic cones and signs.
