Parkside residents have a history of banding together

GOSHEN — The Parkside Neighborhood Association, formally organized in 2006, is included among the newer neighborhood associations to be established within the city of Goshen.

Located on Goshen’s south side, the Parkside neighborhood boundaries are Ninth Street on the east, College Avenue on the south, Main Street on the west and Plymouth Avenue on the north.

“The neighborhood association, what kind of brought us together, was primarily the Parkside Elementary School expansion project,” said Josh Welker, president of the Parkside Neighborhood Association. “We weren’t sure what direction they would proceed into the neighborhood, so we banded together to form a group to see what the options were for the elementary and for our neighborhood moving forward.”

More recently, Welker noted that the association has been communicating with the city regarding the impending Ninth Street redevelopment project, which when underway will directly impact the neighborhood’s eastern boundary.

“So our neighborhood association here recently has been in communication with the city looking at things like design goals and things that may directly affect the neighborhood either in a positive or negative way,” Welker said. “So while the association is made up of a good collection of families and residents, we tend to kind of band together more when certain needs arise, and otherwise it’s kind of a low key neighborhood.”

Several unique features combine to bring out the signature feel of the Parkside neighborhood, one of which is the neighborhood’s tendency toward improvement and upkeep.

“I would say it seems like it’s a cared-for neighborhood, where most of our residents have some kind of renovation done on their homes each year,” Welker said. “A lot of residents respect the historical information contained in some of the homes. Then we’ve also got four or five residents here who have grown up in the neighborhood, moved away, and are now back. So there’s that good backbone of tradition passed down from different generations.”

Welker noted that the neighborhood’s close proximity to local bike/walking trails is also seen as a plus.

“One of our biggest assets is the Maple City Greenway, which connects to the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail and several other bike trails around the area,” Welker said. “We also have quite a few parks within walking distance.”

And one can’t forget the famous South Side Soda Shop and Parkside Elementary School, both of which have their homes in the Parkside neighborhood.

“We definitely enjoy having the school in the neighborhood,” Welker said. “I think the playground and school facilities are really beneficial for some of the newer and growing families in our neighborhoods. In the evenings and on weekends it’s not unusual to see several families with kids playing there. And then of course we have the South Side Soda Shop, which is a staple of our neighborhood.”
