Goshen board approves contract

GOSHEN — The old water storage tank at 308 N. Fifth St. will no longer be part of the city’s skyline after a demolition project takes place.

Members of the Goshen Board of Public Works and Safety awarded a $28,000 contract to Kosinski Demolition, Port Austin, Mich., for the demolition of the tank at the Water Department during Monday’s meeting.

“The tower needs to be painted,” said Mayor Allan Kauffman, “but it’s cheaper to demolish it, even though it is historical. It would be $200,000 to paint the tower.”

He talked to members of the Goshen Historical Society about the tower’s historical significance to the city. He said if the society members felt it had significance, the group would have to find ways to help pay for the painting project.

“It’s coming down,” Kauffman said. “There’s a lot of salvageable value in the metal and that’s why it’s cheaper.”

In other matters the board:

• Received five bids for the central garage expansion project. The following companies placed bids for the project: Brown & Brown Construction, Wakarusa, $727,600; Milestone Construction Inc., Syracuse, $704,600; Ziolkowski Construction Inc., South Bend, $882,150; CDR Construction, Goshen, $828,032; and Ancon Construction Co., Goshen, $772,900.

• Approved an agreement with Ergo Resource Management for Occupational Safety and Health Administration health and safety classes for city employees for a fee of $4,475.

• The board approved the annual 2013 agreements with the following agencies: Sister City Committee, $1,000 to pursue its mission to foster interaction between residents of Goshen and the residents of Bexbach, Germany; Boys & Girls Club, $3,000 to administer summer athletic programs for local youth; Downtown Goshen Inc., $35,000 to pursue its mission of economic development, design, promotion, and organization in the central business district; Goshen Chamber of Commerce, $35,000 to support economic development; North Central Indiana Business Assistance Center, $10,000 to enhance economic development; U.S. 31 Coalition, $500 to support the work of the coalition; and the Economic Development Corp. of Elkhart County, $65,219 to enhance economic development.

• Approved an agreement with the Donohue company for $192,000 digester upgrades in connection with the wastewater treatment plant.

• Approved a request to increase the contract for the Roger’s Park Pavilion fire damage repair project by $2,300 so a cupola can be installed on the pavilion roof. The total contract price is $162,983.
