LaGRANGE —
The LaGrange County Community Foundation Board of Directors has selected Lakeland High School senior Colton Strawser as the LaGrange County Heart of Gold Recipient for 2012.
The Wolcottville resident is the son of Michael and Karen Strawser. He was selected from a pool of eight community nominees. Each nominee’s name was submitted to the Community Foundation by a local resident who is familiar with the nominee’s volunteer efforts to serve others.
The announcement of the award took place at the third annual LCCF Heart of Gold Award Ceremony on Nov. 3 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in LaGrange. More than 50 residents attended the brunch, which was catered by the St. Joseph’s Ladies Sodality. The LIFE Youth Philanthropy Pod helped in serving the event’s guests and presented summaries of each Heart of Gold Nomination.
Each nominee for the Heart of Gold is awarded by the LCCF Board of Directors an opportunity to select a LaGrange County nonprofit of his or her choice from an approved list for a $100 grant from the Community Foundation.
The Heart of Gold Recipient is awarded an inscribed Heart of Gold Bench, an engraved nameplate on the Heart of Gold Wall of Fame and an opportunity to select a LaGrange County nonprofit of his or her choice from an approved list for a $1,000 grant from the Community Foundation.
Nominated by Vera Hypes, Amy Garl and Elaine Hostetler, Strawser is the volunteer executive director for PC’s for Youth, an organization that collects, reconfigures and distributes used computers to young people throughout LaGrange and surrounding counties. He is also a long-term volunteer for Teen Court, a cooperative venture of local schools and the LaGrange County Circuit Court, where teens guide teens in trouble.
In addition, Strawser serves on the executive committee for the Community Foundation’s LIFE Youth Philanthropy Pod. Working with Dekko Foundation and four local schools, the 20 members of LIFE offers grants, scholarships and community service for the benefit of other young people.
Strawser is also a member of Phish, a multi-state youth pod funded and mentored by the Dekko Foundation. In addition, he serves on the board of directors of the LaGrange Communities Youth Centers, Ark Animal Rescue and Adoptions and as an adviser on the Lakeland New Tech Advisory Board.
After graduation, Strawser plans to attend the Indiana University School of Philanthropy in Indianapolis.
