Palin’s book piques interest of local Republicans

GOSHEN, Ind — Sarah Palin’s 15 minutes just got an extension.

Although just released Tuesday, the former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate’s new book, titled “Going Rogue: An American Life,” has been generating quite a stir for several weeks.

On the national level, an appearance on Oprah and a string of articles on what her book was and wasn’t going to get right have brought her back into the spotlight more effectively than daughter Bristol Palin’s ex-boyfriend Levi Johnston appearing in an upcoming issue of Playgirl magazine. Locally, a continued level of support for Palin only heightened with the book’s announcement.

Now that it has hit the shelves, the book is getting picked up by readers and political supporters alike.

“A lot of people either love or hate her, but it’s selling quite well,” Mishawaka Borders Bookstore Manager Mary Wright said. “(Tuesday) it sold probably four and a half times as much as the next-best seller.”

At Better World Books in Goshen, it has been decidedly less popular, but that could change.

“I’ve had one order for it so far, but haven’t had any other purchases yet,” said store manager Brad Weirich. “I didn’t expect it to be a big seller, which is why I only got two copies.”

The smaller bookstore tends to have a different clientele, however, than the larger box stores. Weirich noted that the one copy he sold was purchased by a woman’s son for the promise that she would read it. As for the remaining copy, its days may be numbered.

Joe Guerrero, a leader in Goshen’s Republican party, said he will be picking it up soon.

“She looks pretty strong, and I think it’s vindicating,” Guerrero said. “It sounds like she’s getting a huge reception. I’m excited for Sarah Palin and about her.”

As part of his excitement about Palin, he mentioned a subgroup of the Elkhart County Patriots that has supported Palin throughout her vice presidential bid and beyond. According to Guerrero, the group of “official Sarah Palin cheerleaders” had been thinking about going up to Grand Rapids Wednesday for the first date of her book tour.

Palin’s book tour continues this afternoon in Fort Wayne, where she will sign copies of the book at Meijer.

“Who knows,” Guerrero said, “out of this excitement, they may be able to get more people involved with their keep-Sarah-Palin-in-the-forefront’ movement. They really want to get her to run for president.”

Elkhart County Republican Party member Carol McDowell was even more glowing in her reaction to the book.

“I’ve got it,” McDowell said excitedly. “It’s great, it’s wonderful. It really is. The way I look at her, she is the person that we all hope and dream we can be. The mom, the straight-up American who fights for their children and country and homes and husbands and lives.”

Yesterday, McDowell was able to meet former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee in South Bend to get her copy of his book signed. McDowell also had the opportunity to meet Palin when she came through Fort Wayne during the election and spoke highly of the experience.

“We work, we succeed, we have values and we use those in our everyday lives,” she said. “I think she’s just the epitome of that. She’s just like everybody else. She shakes your hand, looks you in the eye and makes you think you’re just as important as her.”
