Fire damages Ligonier building

LIGONIER — Ligonier firefighters responded to a fire in the downtown Saturday after a 5:39 p.m. call to the Noble County 911 center reporting smoke at 314 S. Calvin St.

Supported by the Cromwell, Topeka and Kendallville Fire Departments, town firefighters put out the blaze by 6:04 p.m.

“It’s an old building,” Ligonier Fire Chief Jeremy Weaver said Sunday. “The downstairs has several businesses and has a couple apartments upstairs.”

According to Weaver, the fire began in one of the upstairs apartments, where juveniles had been playing with a lighter. That particular apartment sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage, with neighboring apartments being damaged by smoke and a little water and the downstairs businesses sustaining some smoke damage but little else.

Firefighters remained at the scene until 9:18 p.m. to ensure the fire was completely out.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
