City Manager David Cavazos recently named Ed Zuercher the new Phoenix assistant city manager.
Zuercher oversees three deputy city manager positions, the public safety manager and city departments including Public Transit, Budget and Research, Street Transportation, Information Technology Services and the city’s light rail program.
“Ed Zuercher is the perfect choice for this job,” Cavazos said. “He is enormously intelligent, talented and committed to public service. City employees and Phoenix residents will benefit from Ed’s management style and knowledge of city government.”
Zuercher, 44, joined the city in 1993 as a management intern. He became a management assistant in the City Manager’s Office in 1995 and assistant to the city manager in 2000. Zuercher was the public transit director in 2001 and executive assistant to the city manager in 2003. He served as the mayor’s co-chief of staff and chief of staff for three years and most recently served as deputy city manager.
Zuercher received his master’s in public administration from the University of Kansas and his bachelor’s in English/Secondary Education from Goshen College in Indiana. Prior to receiving his master’s degree, he taught high school for four years in Hesston, Kan.
