LaGRANGE, Ind — For anyone who would like to purchase books as Christmas gifts, the LaGrange County Historical Society has the following titles available: “LaGrange County in the War of the Rebellion:1861-1865” volumes 1 and 2 (only four left), “1882 History of LaGrange County,” “Indiana, Pictorial History,” “My Town, Your Town,” “1936 History of LaGrange County,” “Illustrated 1874 Atlas of LaGrange County, Indiana,” Wainwright Films on DVD, and “Cemeteries of Steuben County, Indiana.”
The collectible Cat’s Meow replicas of the LaGrange County Courthouse, Carnegie Library, the Old LaGrange High School, Wolcottville Lima School and the Newbury Township School (Shipshewana High School) are still available for purchase. They can be ordered by calling Pam Hart-Fry at 463-3970.

Legion fish fry
The LaGrange American Legion Post 215 will have a steak fry dinner Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The cost is $9 per person and the public is invited. The Legion is located north of LaGrange on Industrial Drive.

Library news
The Second Saturday Book Club will meet Saturday from 11 a.m. until noon. The book being studied by the club is “The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.” The club is for adults 16 years and older.
The LaGrange Library will have a “Make and Take Ornaments” craft night for all ages to participate. The library staff will supply everything needed to turn some shiny odds and ends into Christmas ornaments. Meet at the Shipshewana Branch Library on Dec. 14 from 3 to 4 p.m. Meet at the Topeka Branch library on Dec. 15 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. or at the LaGrange Public Library on Dec. 17 from 3 to 4 p.m.
Park department
The Breakfast With the Birds group will meet Dec. 16 at 8:30 a.m. at Maple Wood Nature Center. The discussion will be “In Step With Nature.” This is the perfect time of year to follow tracks in the snow. Participants will learn the basics on how to identify what animals have been visiting by their foot tracks as well as other clues they leave behind.
By looking for these things a nature walk can be much more revealing.
Coffee and doughnuts will be served. A $1 donation is recommended.
Volunteer training
Maple Wood Nature Center and LaGrange County Parks programs are possible through the help of many dedicated volunteers through the year. They are looking for a few more people who would like to help out with various tasks. The most frequent need is a Sunday afternoon host at Maple Wood Nature Center.
Other service projects for volunteers can include maple sapper, festival host, or special project help such as typing, photo scanning, trail clearing, map making, to name a few.
