Coin worth $1,200 left in Salvation Army kettle

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Salvation Army officials in South Bend are celebrating the discovery of a gold coin worth more than 1,000 in one of the charity’s red kettles.

A Salvation Army volunteer bell ringer discovered the South African Krugerrand worth about $1,200 Friday in the kettle set up outside of a Wal-Mart store in South Bend.

Salvation Army Maj. Bob Webster says the volunteer called him and urged him to quickly get over to the store because there was something he had to see.

Webster says the sizable donation will help many families during the holiday season and is a blessing not just for them but also for the person who dropped the coin into the kettle.

He says this is the first krugerrand that’s turned up in a kettle in South Bend.
