Members of the Elkhart County Board of Zoning Appeals had a fairly quick meeting Thursday morning approving several special use petitions with very little comment.
Special use petitions approved Thursday include:
• A request by Charlie and Nancy Kline for the installation of two wind turbines in an agricultural-1 zone on the west side of C.R. 27 near C.R. 8 in Washington Township. The turbines will be used as a supplemental, alternative energy source in an effort to cut down on energy costs.
• A request by Mahlon Jay and Tammy Bontrager of Jefferson Township for the installation of a single wind turbine on the northwest side of C.R. 22 near C.R. 127, also to be used as an alternative energy source.
• A request by Terry and Lisa Arendt to allow a realty office to be run out of their home on the south side of C.R. 24 near C.R. 9 in Concord Township.
• A request by Dan and Kathy Emmans for the installation of two wind turbines on the west side of Ind. 15 at the intersection of Ind. 15 and the Michigan state line in Washington Township.
• A request by the state of Indiana for construction of a private baseball diamond for use by state police and Toll Road employees in a private park located on the northwest corner of C.R. 1 and the Toll Road, just south of C.R. 4 in Cleveland Township.
• A request by Ernest and Glen Fry to allow a small business for repair and sale of firearms to be run out of their home on the north side of C.R. 32, just west of C.R. 43 in Clinton Township.
Two special use petitions were also denied by the board Thursday, including:
• A request by Maria Ramirez for the housing of 80 chickens on her property located in a residential area on the north side of C.R. 10, just east of C.R. 3 in Cleveland Township. Ramirez was given 60 days to either remove the chickens from her property or come back before the board with an alternate petition involving a significantly reduced number of chickens.
• A request by Mark Miller for operation of a tattoo parlor on the north side of U.S. 33, just west of Lewis Avenue in Concord Township.
