Nearly $69,000 raised during ADEC’s annual Ride-A-Bike

ELKHART — A generous gift from the estate of a Middlebury man pushed Team Ridge from Northridge High School back into the winner’s circle as first place team for the ADEC Ride-A-Bike for the fifth year in a row.  

The team’s streak is impressive, said Larry Bontrager, ADEC vice president, during an awards luncheon June 29 at Antonio’s Restaurant in Elkhart, but so is the team’s fund-raising total of close to $40,000.

“This was an extraordinary year for Ride-A-Bike,” Bontrager said before announcing the top pledge raisers for the 40th annual event, which took play May 19 at Concord High School. “This year, all of you together raised close to $69,000 for ADEC.”

Team Ridge, led by Coach Jonathan Kirkton, wasn’t the only repeat winner. Tom Nickel of Bristol, the top adult pledge winner for the sixth year in a row, raised $2,345 for ADEC.

A new youth winner did emerge. Jonathan Riblet of Elkhart raised $205 in pledges in his first year as an active Ride-A-Bike participant.

The final award, the Bradley S. Vite Award for Volunteerism, went to Fabric Services of Bristol for the company’s 10-year history with Ride-A-Bike as both participant and sponsor. Bradley Vite, a longtime ADEC supporter, presented the award and described Fabric Services as a true corporate partner.  

“Fabric Services has come alongside ADEC to do more than just write a check,” he said. “The company and its employees have joined us in our mission and our experiences and encourage others to do the same.”

The spring Ride-A-Bike is ADEC’s main community fundraiser and the longest-running event of its type in the county. This year more than 300 participants came together to ride bicycles or walk for ADEC. Proceeds from Ride-A-Bike help fund the supports and services ADEC offers to children, adults and families experiencing life with disabilities.  

‘We have a lot of reasons to celebrate today,” Bontrager said. “This definitely was a special year for Ride-A-Bike.”
