Bonneyville vintage base ball team hosting tryouts

The Bonneyville Millers, a vintage base ball club sponsored by the Elkhart County Parks and Recreation Department, is currently recruiting ballplayers for its upcoming season.

The club will hold tryouts at the following dates and times, with all tryouts to be held at Oxbow Park in Dunlap Sunday at 2 p.m., April 22 at 2 p.m. and May 3 at 6 p.m.

“The Millers ball club has been a feature of the Parks Department since 1999,” said the club’s manager, John “Buckwheat” Jenney, proprietor of the grist mill at Bonneyville Mill County Park in Bristol. “It’s a recreational, historical, and educational program, and our volunteers strive to maintain the historical authenticity of the game in their uniforms, equipment, and demeanor.”

The club plays by 1860 rules: no gloves, no sliding, and the requisite display of gentlemanly and ladylike behavior at all times.

Matches are played in meadows and other available open spaces, and all obstacles in and around the field are considered “in play.”

For more information, call John Jenney at (574) 825-9324, or visit www.elkhartcountyparks.org/bonneyvillemillers.htm.
