Japanese hibachi, sushi restaurant opens in Goshen

GOSHEN — Jay Zheng has been in the restaurant business for most of his young life. Now he’s in the restaurant business in Goshen.

Zheng is the owner of the new Kaizen Hibachi Grill Sushi & Bar. The restaurant is located in the former Pagoda Inn, but the location is the only similarity with the old buffet-style restaurant.

The building was gutted and a contemporary Japanese theme was created. A sushi bar and a martini bar bracket the dinning room. The martini bar soothes customers not only with the many alcohol mixes available, but also the H2O lighting that floats across the glassware. Throughout the restaurant relaxing contemporary music fills the background atmosphere.

But it’s the food that draws in customers.

“Our food is really presentation oriented,” Zheng said. “Every dish comes out a different way. When you look at it, it is almost art.”

Zheng said he is from Chicago and decided to open the restaurant in Goshen because it was a good location and should draw in customers from the greater Michiana area.

“We see a good client base for good Asian food,” he said.

The menu is extensive, with 20 choices of appetizers, including beef rolls, grilled rock shrimp, battered soft shell crab and Japanese beef dumplings.

There are three soups offered and four salads, including a seaweed offering.

There are also noodle dishes, fried rice offerings and tempura (fried) main dishes.

There are also classic Japanese rolls, nigiri and sashimi and speciality rolls offered.

The restaurant is at 2820 Elkhart Road. The phone is 574-533-2568. The restaurant is also listed on Facebook.
