New hours of operation at the library begin Tuesday. The hours are: Monday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday 1 to 8 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 5 p.m.  

Storytime Express

Sessions are set for Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and will feature the first of a series on life skills. Stories about responsibility, fingerplays or songs and a craft activity are also offered. This program is free, and is recommended for children ages 2 to 5.

‘Read That!’

The 2012-13 season of the “Read That!” book discussion group for teens begins Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m.  

Participants will read the realistic teen fiction novel “The Running Dream.” The book focuses on a character named Jessica who loses her leg in an accident. Forced to evaluate both her past and her future, she questions what it means to have a disability and whether it changes her identity.

The group is open to middle school and high school teens.  The first five registrants get a free copy of the book to read and keep. To sign up, call the library at 533-9531.

Book clubs

Sign-ups begin this week for the library’s second-grad book club and the Girls Only and Boys Only book clubs, for third-, fourth- and fifth-graders. Sign up at the Children’s Reference Desk. For more information, call 537-0241.

Book sale

A Friends of the Library Book Sale is set for Sept. 20 in the auditorium from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Fall Festival

This year’s Fall Festival is set for Oct. 20. More information will be forthcoming in this column.

Classic movie night

This month’s classic movie is “Young Man With a Horn”.  It will be shown on Sept. 18 at 6 p.m. Snacks and a brief discussion will follow the film.

Preschool Storytime

Preschool Storytimes on Monday at 10:30 a.m. and Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. resume Sept. 17. Registration will begin on Tuesday. This year’s theme is “Fall Into a World of Books”.  All children ages 3 to 5 are welcome.

Book club

“The Good Wife Strikes Back” by Elizabeth Buchan is the selection for the September Book Club, which will meet Sept. 12 at noon.

‘Calling All Crafters’

The next Calling All Crafters circle will be on Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. Call 848-7458 for more information.

‘Soul Ink’

Soul Ink is a writers’ group hosted by library personnel.  The next meeting will be on Wednesday. Contact Desiree at 848-7458 for more information.

‘Crafting Hope’


Participants in the library’s Crafting Hope program meet bi-monthly to sew simple projects for local and global organizations.  Over the past year, the group has donated hundreds of pillowcase dresses, shorts, toys, bibs, blankets and more to people locally and around the world.

Crafting Hope will meet again Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to make skirts for girls and women in need.

‘Knee High Nappanee’        

What does the world look like when you’re 3 feet tall? Find out at the second-annual Knee High Nappanee children’s photography exhibit at the Nappanee Public Library Oct. 4 to 31.

This year’s assignment is to capture the Apple Festival in downtown Nappanee. Children age five to twelve can participate by attending a photography workshop at the library Sept. 13 from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Participants will hear tips on taking pictures, and one free disposable camera will be given out per child.

Children must return used cameras to the library by Monday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. to have their photographs included in the exhibit.

‘Artful Quilters’

The next meeting of “The Artful Quilters” guild is Sept. 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Membership in the guild is open to anyone. Yearly dues are $15 and are used for the benefit of the guild.  Those interested can attend two meetings to get acquainted before becoming members.

Library tour

New cardholders and those interested in learning more about Library services are invited to a guided tour of the library Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.

After-school program


“A Friend is a Friend is a Friend” is the theme for the After-School Special set for Sept. 11 at 3:30 p.m. Participants will read, play games and have a treat. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited. Registration is required.

Board meeting

The Wakarusa Library Board of Trustees will meet Sept. 14 at 7:45 a.m. in the library meeting room. A public hearing on the proposed 2013 budget will be held.

“32 Third Graders and One Class Bunny” by Phillip Done and “The Complete Flower Gardener” by Karan Davis Cutler is given by Mr. and Mrs. Woodrow Helenburg in memory of Elma Stickel.

Library cards


During the month of September, everyone who signs up for a new library card will get their picture taken with their new card.

Library staffers will use the photos to make a customized “READ” poster that will be displayed all month in the library. Also, anyone getting a card in September will have their name entered in a drawing for a $25 gift certificate to a local restaurant of their choice.

Nutrition program

Joan Younce from the Kosciusko County Extension office will present the next nutrition program, “Farmer’s Market Meals,” Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m.  A sign-up sheet will be available beginning Tuesday at the adult circulation desk.

Preschool Story Time

Preschool Story Time sign-up will begin at the children’s desk on Sept. 10. Children ages 3 to 6 are invited to participate.  Preschool Story Time will be on Wednesdays at 10:15 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. starting Sept. 26 or Thursday evenings at 7 starting Sept. 27.  Call 658-4312 for more details.

Knitting Club

The Evening Knitting Club will meet Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. in the library meeting room.

Inspirational author Vannetta Chapman will be at the library Sept. 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. Books from her “Pebble Creek Amish” series and “Shipshewana Amish” series will be available for purchase.

Children’s programs

Sign-up is available for Babies and Books (children 18 months and younger), Toddler Time (children 18 to 36 months), and Pre-School Story Time (children ages 3 to 5). These programs start this week of September 4. Home School Club (students in Kindergarten through sixth grade) starts Sept. 10. Visit the library’s website for program details.

Friends of the Library

Those interested in becoming members of Friends of the Library can do so by downloading the group’s brochure with attached membership form from the library website. Mail the filled out form and a check to the library or drop them off at the front desk. Membership can be renewed by using the same form.

    Access to the CVS at 410 S. Main St. in Goshen could soon be easier for those with disabilities following a ruling by the Goshen Plan Commission Tuesday afternoon.
    During their meeting Tuesday, Goshen Plan Commission members gave their blessing to a request by CVS Pharmacy and State Permits Inc. for a major change to the CVS Planned Unit Development that seeks to reconfigure the north portion of the parking lot to increase the overall Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility of the site. The final site plan for the PUD was also approved by the commission Tuesday, and the request will now be forwarded on to the Goshen City Council with a favorable recommendation.
