There’s preserved history above Goshen’s Historical Museum

GOSHEN — Twenty-five steps lead upstairs to apartments on the second floor above the Goshen Historical Museum.

“They were last rented in the 1950s,” museum curator Dale Garber said.

A newspaper dated 1956 was spread out on the counter in the kitchen of the second apartment closest to the alley behind the museum.

The wooden cabinets in the kitchen were painted off-white with dark green trim.

“There’s a lot of room up here,” Garber said, walking around the empty rooms filled with dust and cobwebs in the corners.

He pointed to the push button electrical outlets on the walls and in the hallways.

“That shows the era when they were used,” he said, which included the ’40s and ’50s.

One of the bathrooms still has a wide-pedestal sink and a claw-foot bathtub.

An old boiler system was used for heating the apartments and a storage coal bin still has pieces of coal in it, Garber said, picking up a small piece with his fingers.

The front rooms facing Main Street were also rented by two dentists at one time, Garber added, and now are being used as storage for items used in various displays or donated to the museum.

Some of the items — including neon green kitchen chairs circa 1970s, or the television console set with a wood grain finish mounted on legs circa 1960s — show the different eras in their color and styles just like the apartments.

The public cannot access the second floor at this time, Garber added.
