Fairfield School Board hires familiar face to lead

— BENTON — Steve Thalheimer will be the next superintendent for Fairfield Community Schools.

The current assistant superintendent was unanimously approved by the board at its meeting Thursday. Thalheimer will replace Tom Tumey, who is retiring.

Thalheimer has been with the corporation for five years, coming from Lawrenceburg Community School Corporation in southern Indiana. He was attracted to Fairfield by the community’s commitment to education.

“It was much stronger than what I had experienced in southern Indiana,” he said. “The district here is slightly larger than where I came from and I saw the same potential.”

Thalheimer’s immediate goals will be to transition the corporation to the new teacher evaluation system, which will begin in the fall.

Also, he said he would like to focus on making sure Fairfield graduates succeed beyond high school, whether in college or a career.

“I’d like to see our graduates as prepared as possible,” Thalheimer said, which could mean earning college credit or hands-on work experience.

His contract will run Jan. 2, 2013, through Jan. 1, 2016. His base salary will be $101,733 for the first two years and increase to $105,000 in the final year.

In other business, board members approved a number of donations, including: $2,500 to FFA from Farm Credit Services; a 24-foot trailer valued at $5,620 to the music department from the music boosters; and $500 to the Super Mileage Project from Aluminum Trailer Company.
