GOSHEN — The Gallery at the Millrace will be the new venue for viewing the combined works of the many area artists who occupy the Millrace Center.
After weeks of preparation, art collectors, Dave Pottinger and Faye Peterson, owners with Pat and Owen Weaver of the Millrace Center, have juried and placed art on exhibit in a variety of media from the center’s five guilds and five individual studios.
The new gallery will utilize space within the Sweet Waters Interiors building, owned by Deborah Carpenter, and located at 212 W. Washington St., near Second Street.
“All the guild members can sell things in a setting as beautiful as a gallery could be anywhere,” Peterson said. “We help to support local artists, share their artwork and provide a venue for them to sell.”
The studios at the guild include the Clay Artists Guild, the Jewelry guild, the Painters Guild, the Photographers Guild and the Woodworkers Guild. Individual artists’ studios include Wilma Harder, jewelry designer; Gail Janssen, fiber artist; Rachel Shenk, woodblock printmaker; Jim Shenk, guitar maker and wood designers Gene Short and Jake Loewen.
Donna Arnold, co-facilitator of the Goshen Painters Guild, said she was very excited about the opening.
“It’s a wonderful opportunity and that it’s run as a business model and not as a co-op is very exciting,” Arnold said. “Dave Pottinger and his wife, Faye, have done a wonderful job to pull it all together. It’s fun.”
Director of the Goshen Clay Artists’ Guild, Fred Driver, said the gallery will provide a good opportunity for all the guilds to participate and show their art.
“As a potter, it gives the opportunity to display some crystalline glaze work, wood fired pieces, and to also emphasize specific processes of ways and technologies for carving in clay,” Driver said, “We’ve been working at this idea for three to four months and there has been quite a bit of excitement and anticipation.”
Other occupants at The Millrace Center include Rachel’s Bread, a European-style bakery and cafe, and the Goshen Farmer’s Market. The gallery will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
