Veterans Day is today, but many local groups are hosting events Monday.
In Goshen at 11 a.m. Monday, the public is invited to the Elkhart County Courthouse in Goshen for a Veterans Day service.
Milford officials will host a Veterans Day program at 9 a.m. Monday in Milford School gymnasium.
All current military members and veterans will be honored. A special tribute will be paid to 2nd Lt. Harry J. Michael, a Milford resident who earned the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously during World War II. Michael was 23 years old and in Company L, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division when near Neiderzerf, Germany, he single-handedly captured two German machine gun emplacements, reconnoitered the area along and led his platoon in two attacks which captured more enemy soldiers and materiel, according to a Wikipedia entry.
He was killed while hunting for an enemy sniper the next morning. He died March 14, 1945, a day after his 23rd birthday.
Also on Monday, starting at 8 a.m., Wawasee High School officials will honor local veterans with a student-led program and a guest speaker, Wawasee graduate Jason Salter.
North Webster American Legion Post will provide an honor guard to present the colors, fire a salute and play “Taps.” The public is invited.
Tuesday
Public hearing — Syracuse will have a public hearing at 9 a.m. at Town Hall so members of the community can express their views on the proposed federally funded Community Development Block Grant project of purchasing the Oakwood Inn and its surrounding property. The amount of funds requested is $700,000. The grant request says that $359,800 of those funds will be used for activities that will benefit low- and moderate-income people. And town officials are proposing to expend about $3.8 million in non-CDBG funds on the project. Those funds are expected to come from Oakwood Retreat LLC.
Thursday
The Elkhart County Historical Society will host a presentation on the history of the Miami people, which will include a talk by George Ironstrack. The presentation will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday. Along with the history of the Miami people, Ironstrack will discuss efforts of the Myaamia Project, operated out of the University of Miami of Ohio.
The meeting will be held in the Community Building at the Elkhart County Historical Museum in Bristol. The public is invited for a buffet dinner beginning at 6 p.m., with the program to follow shortly after. The cost is $15 and reservations are required by Tuesday. Friday
“The Sound of Music” — Fairfield High School students will perform “The Sound of Music” Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Seating is reserved. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through the school bookstore by calling 831-2184.
Next weekend
“The Contemporary Nutcracker” — The Lerner Theatre in Elkhart will present “The Contemporary Nutcracker” from 2 to 3:45 p.m. Saturday.
The synopsis: “Klara is a homeless girl living in today’s busy world with the hustle and bustle of people preparing for the holiday season. In the end, Klara teaches us that all people are special, no matter if they seem different or unimportant.”
