Local teens named 'youths of the year'

GOSHEN —  Four local teens were named Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year recently and represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart, Goshen, Middlebury and Nappanee. The Youth of the Year program recognizes outstanding contributions to a Boys & Girls Club member’s family, school, community and club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome by a YOY competitor.

The Youth of the Year winners for the county are as follows:

• Elkhart — Glorimar Rios, 13, a seventh-grader at North Side Middle School;

• Goshen — Briana Gunn, 16, a sophomore at Goshen High School;

• Middlebury — Conner Lantz, 17, a junior at Northridge High School, and

• Nappanee — Grace Adkins, 15, a freshman at NorthWood High School.

Rios, the daughter of Alex and Marilyn Rios, is a three-year member of the Elkhart Club. She is involved in Mitch’s Kids Jr. Helpers, is a member of the Newspaper Club and the Secretary of the Torch Club. She is also actively involved in the Drama Club at North Side Middle School.

Gunn, the daughter of Bryan and Amy Gunn, is a nine-year member of the Goshen Club. She is an active Club member, serving in the Maple City Keystone Club. She leads fundraisers for tornado victims, dances, movie and roller nights and the Soap Box Derby. She assists with Cadet and Junior Ballroom Dance classes as a member of the Teen Ballroom Dance program. She also regularly volunteers in the art room and in numerous other areas of the Club.

Lantz, the son of Eric and Chris Lantz, is a nine-year member of the Middlebury Club. He participates in the Raider Keystone Club, in many food drives, volunteers in the Pack A Backpack program, and assembles food boxes for the local food pantry. Conner has participated in golf and is currently serving as quarterback on the Northridge High School football team.

Adkins, the daughter of Janeca Adkins, is an eight-year member of the Nappanee Club. She is on the girls basketball team and volunteers in many areas of the club, including the Games Room, Teen Center, Learning Center and with the Bible Time program.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Elkhart County is a youth development agency that provides after-school programming for children and youth between the ages of 6-18.
