GOSHEN —
On this day of thanks, as people gather around tables with family and friends to share food, drink and good conversation, they also remember those things for which they are thankful.
It is no different for Jim Brenneman, president of Goshen College. Wednesday afternoon, as he shared what is in his thoughts this season.
“When I stop and look at the big picture, I think of all the possible worlds one could imagine — and I can imagine quite a few — I’m thankful for the one that we have,” Brenneman said. “The one that’s given to us by a good Creator, the one that has both challenges and blessings, ups and downs.”
Brenneman said running the college continues to be an honor he thoroughly enjoys. He said he felt privileged to help shape the life of the minds and emotions of the soul of the students there, calling them part of the future leadership of the world.
“When it comes right down to it, I’m thankful for my next breath. And the next. And the next,” he said. “Years ago, my father was younger than I was and ended up on a respirator, and within a week died. I don’t say that lightly, I just think things could be worse.”
Brenneman said he and his family will sit down for a traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey and stuffing, pies and cranberry sauce.
“My wife makes a very good date pudding,” he added, laughing.
He said Thanksgiving is a time to eat too much and watch a little football.
“It’s a great season,” Brenneman said, “to kick back, pause and reflect on what you have.”
