Bomb threat reported at Cequent

GOSHEN — Goshen police and firefighters were called to the Cequent Performance Products plant on the city’s south side at 7:40 a.m. today to investigate a bomb threat.

Police blocked the entrances to the plant while a search was conducted. Firefighters left the scene about 90 minutes. Police remained, but did open the entrances. Goshen police reported the employees were evacuated from the building and no bomb was found.

Police said the threat that started the search stemmed from a threat being left in the building.

In a statement issued to the media, TriMas, the parent company of Cequent said, “Employees of the Cequent Performance Products facility in Goshen, Indiana have returned to work following an early morning bomb threat that caused the evacuation of the facility. Law enforcement officials investigated and informed Cequent management that it was safe to allow employees back in the plant. Cequent, a TriMas company, takes any threat against the safety and welfare of its employees seriously. The company is offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who made the threat. TriMas encourages anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 342-STOP.”

Employees at the plant, who are members of the Steelworkers Union, are waiting to hear if TriMas Corp. of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., will close the plant and move about 400 jobs to Reynosa, Mexico. The company said it would study the move until Nov. 19 and then make a decision.

The plant manufactures tow hitches and other vehicle towing equipment.
