The excitement of the students at St. John the Evangelist School in Goshen could barely be contained Friday as they waited to be rewarded for two successful fundraising campaigns.
The first fundraiser was a Lap-a-thon sponsored by physical education teacher Andrew Wallach. Wallach challenged the students to raise $1,000 for new gym equipment and if they did, he would shave his head. The students far surpassed Wallach’s challenge, raising a total of $3,000.
During a special assembly held Friday, Youth Minister Sarah Knight took a razor to Wallach’s head, much to the delight of the student body. They yelled and stomped their feet as the hair fell to the floor of the gym.
Wallach said the third-grade class raised the most — a total of $779 and they would be treated to a pizza party. Wallach also recognized two individual students who raised the most money — Sarah and Riley Kim, who brought in $249 each. The children walked or ran laps in the gym and received pledge money for each lap completed.
To honor Sarah and Riley, Wallach named some of the new gym equipment in their honor. The new large-sized volleyballs will be called the Riley gym volleyballs and a giant-sized soccer ball will be the Sarah Kim soccer ball.
Several different types of balls were purchased, as was hockey sticks, Hula Hoops and much more with the money raised in the Lap-A-thon.
The other successful fundraiser was the Market Day pie fundraiser during November. The students were told the top three pie sellers would be allowed to throw a pie in the face of their principal, Sharon Alexander.
The excitement built again as Alexander, all decked out in plastic trash bags, took her seat. School secretary Peggy Mueller said the students sold a total of 194 pies, which was more than usual and the profit for the school was $700.
The top three sellers were Jaden Riegsecker, fourth grade, Montserrat Vasquez-Diaz, third grade and Isaac Knight, first grade.
Alexander said when she heard of the plan, “I’m game” but admitted she didn’t know she’d be taking three pies!
