After more than 52 years of cutting hair in Goshen, barber Lanny Scott is hanging up his shears after working this morning at Scott’s Barber Shop, 106 E. Lincoln Avenue.
After completing barber school in 1958, Lanny explained, he worked a year as an apprentice for Owen Miller Jr. He also worked for a time with Bill Osterloo at the Westwood Barber Shop.
After Paul, his brother, completed his barber training, he and Lanny teamed up and “have been a gruesome two-some ever since,” Lanny joked.
Lanny has been the long-time butt of Paul’s jokes about age, as Paul is two years younger. And during Paul’s long tenure on the Goshen City Council, Lanny labeled his younger brother “the senator.”
Over the years, Lanny was involved in stock car racing in the area and for many years after that he maintained “Scott’s Garage,” a repair business at his “steel city” buildings at Ninth and New York streets.
After Lanny had his last big birthday, he began cutting back, and has worked the past couple years Tuesday through Saturday, he said.
Lanny said he plans to spend some time at his workshop.
“But I don’t have any big plans (in retirement),” he said. “I may get to New Paris for coffee.”
His wife, Jeanne, retired earlier from the county welfare department.
Paul and Lanny are the sons of the late Wilbur and Mildred Scott, who were long-time residents on East Lafayette Street.
Paul said he has a plan to bring in another barber in Lanny’s place, as Jessica Double will soon join him. Jessica worked in the shop during Lanny’s last recuperation after shoulder surgery.
