Digester building reroofing amendment OK’d

GOSHEN — No matter which way you look at it, 1,200 just doesn’t equal 2,200.

With that in mind, a recently approved contract with Five Star Roofing Systems to reroof the Digester Building of the Wastewater Treatment Plant needed to be amended at Tuesday’s Goshen Board of Public Works and Safety to reflect the correct square footage of the building’s roof.

The original agreement, approved at the Nov. 5 meeting, was for $7,110 for a 1,200 square-foot roof, according to a memo from Keitha Windsor, legal compliance administrator for the city. The new agreement for the actual 2,200 square-foot roof is for $13,777.50.

“The price didn’t go up proportionally because the Digester Building has stones on it, which will require additional work to remove,” Windsor said.

The original estimation was for the Chemical Building, which the contractor incorrectly identified as the Digester Building.

Opening and awarding bids

Mayor Allan Kauffman opened bids for the demolition of the water storage tank at 305 N. Fifth St. at Tuesday’s meeting.

Universal Silo Removal, Sandusky, Mich., bid $67,500 for the project, while Iseler Demolition, Romeo, Mich., bid $38,700 and Kosinski Demolition, Port Austin, Mich., but $10,800.

Windsor said the wide discrepancy between the bids comes from the companies taking, or not taking, exceptions to the specifications given with the bid request. For example, Kosinski did not include foundation removal in their bid, which accounts for a significant cost, Windsor said.

The bid for the Indiana Avenue Sidewalk Repair Project was awarded to Niblock Excavating. Niblock bid $15,690 for the project.

Other business:

• The board members approved a partial street closure for Saturday. Jeff Spry from Tyrian Lodge No. 12, located at Fifth and Jefferson Streets, requested closing off the parking spots on the south side of Jefferson Street between Fifth Street and the alleyway for a Goodwill Donation Drive. The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The spaces will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., when the semi-trailer from Goodwill will be dropped off and parked in these spaces.

• The board members also approved sewer relief for Sharon Chiddister, 1008 College Ave. Chiddister said she had a pipe break in her crawl space that created the high consumption of water.
