GOSHEN —
Elkhart County Commissioners Monday approved a request for $550,000 from the Major Bridge fund to go toward right-of-way acquisition for the recently completed Six Span Bridge project.
“Back when we built the Six Span Bridge, we were negotiating with the McDonald’s there to purchase right-of-way for that,” said County Highway Manager Jeff Taylor of the property located at the intersection of C.R. 17 and Ind. 120. “We didn’t agree on a price. Their appraiser said one figure and ours said another, so that negotiation led to filing condemnation proceedings and this is the result of the court-ordered mediation. That’s the settlement we agreed to pay.”
Originally built in 1968, the Elkhart County Highway Department in 2009 initiated a major reconstruction of the bridge which included widening the bridge from four to seven lanes and installing two new 8-foot-wide sidewalks. The bridge reconstruction was officially completed in July 2011 at a cost of $18 million.
