MIDDLEBURY —
Plymouth grabbed the momentum, literally, on the first play of the night against Northridge Friday.
Plymouth sophomore Justin Drudge returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. Plymouth’s potent option attack produced two more first-quarter touchdowns and never slowed down as the Rockies rolled to a 34-0 decision over the Raiders.
Plymouth quarterback Ike Kastner was near-perfect running the option as the Rockies improved to 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Kastner rushed 15 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns. Fullback Sam Stevens added 134 yards rushing and a touchdown as the Rockies were hard to slow. They finished with 406 yards rushing and 18 first downs.
“They were physical against us, and we took a step back defensively. We haven’t played like that against the run,” said Northridge coach Jonathan Kirkton. “They were ready and we were not.”
After the opening score, Plymouth made it 14-0 when Kastner scored on a 30-yard run on an option keeper. On the next Rockie possession, Kastner kept it on the option once again and outraced the defense 54 yards for a score. Plymouth held a 20-0 lead eight minutes into the game.
Northridge (0-4, 0-2 NLC) had a strong drive midway through the first quarter. A 22-yard run by Travis Schlabach keyed an eight-play drive to the Plymouth 29-yard line. But the Raiders were thwarted on fourth down and turned the ball over on downs.
Late in the first half, Kastner finished an 18-play drive with his third touchdown, a 4-yard burst that pushed the lead to 28-0 by halftime. Sam Stevens added a 5-yard touchdown run with 6:21 left for the final score.
The best second-half drive for the Raiders came on their final possession. Tanner Love completed a 14-yard pass to Sam Stahley and a 17-yarder to Derek Woolsey as Northridge drove to the Raider 9 before running out of time.
“We did play better in the second half, and we defended the option better,” said Kirkton.
Schlabach rushed for 60 yards to lead Northridge, while Woolsey caught two passes for 28 yards.
Northridge will host Warsaw for its Homecoming night on Friday
