PREP FOOTBALL: Minutemen’s attack too much for Goshen Redskins

DUNLAP — Concord has established itself authoritatively this season as the top team in the NLC, and the Minutemen showed why Friday night with a dominating 48-7 win over Goshen.

The Minutemen, ranked  No. 3 in the Indiana AP Class 4A high school football poll, did not play perfect football on this chilly but pleasant late-summer night, but they kept their mistakes to a minimum and took advantage of a few Goshen miscues  en route to a conference victory that kept them perfect in both the NLC and overall in 2012 (5-0, 4-0).

Concord coach Tim Dawson said his team executed its game plan and played well in all three phases of the game.

“We like to use the run to set up the pass, and we were able to do that tonight,” Dawson said.

Indeed, the Minutemen had 203 yards on the ground to go with 198 through the air for an attack that could not have been much more balanced.

Defense scores first

Despite the Minutemen’s aforementioned high-powered offense, it was the Concord defense getting the Minutemen on the scoreboard first in this one. Cornerback Brandon Thomas picked off a Goshen pass and motored 43 yards to pay dirt on the pick six with 7:48 left in the first.

The Minutemen expanded their lead to 14-0 late in the stanza when junior quarterback Trevor Wilmore scrambled 24 yards for a score.

Goshen put together an impressive  drive later in the quarter and cashed in on a 36-yard TD pass from sophomore quarterback Derek DeMeyer to senior receiver Cristian Barron.

But the Minutemen added two more second-quarter scores for a 28-7 halftime advantage.

The Minutemen added three more TDs in the second half while keeping the Redskins (1-4, 1-2) out of the end zone.

For Goshen coach Mike Cheviron, once again there were flashes of good things, but not nearly enough.

“If you don’t show up for work, you don’t get paid,” Cheviron said. “And we didn’t get paid tonight.”

Among the positives Cheviron saw were the scoring drive at the end of the first quarter and improved pass blocking.

But there were also mental mistakes, including several dropped passes and a trap play run the wrong direction.

“We just were not ready to play tonight,” Cheviron said. “It’s very frustrating. There are a lot of things we need to change.”

The Minutemen visit Jimtown next week as they take a brief break from NLC competition for a longstanding nonconference rivalry game. Goshen travels to Warsaw, a 35-21 winner over Northridge Friday night in another NLC contest.
