BENTON —
Five days after taking first place in the Michigan City Marquette Invitational that included wins over Pioneer, Michigan City, Crown Point and Fort Wayne Blackhawk, this wasn’t what Fairfield High School volleyball coach Carla Herschberger was expecting.
The Falcons hosted the Mishawaka Marian Knights Thursday evening and the visitors returned home with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-19 triumph over the previously unbeaten Falcons.
“We had a scared look on our faces at the start and it carried over all the way through the match,” the coach said. “We depend on our passing to run our offense and the passing was just not there tonight. I don’t know what it was. Marian’s serves didn’t look like anything we haven’t seen before.”
Marian has plenty of height led by sophomore middle blocker Elizabeth Asdell who appeared to be well over 6-0.
“We saw height in Michigan City, but not like this,” Herschberger said. “This was height and talent. The Marian players are going to hit over you. Marian is a very talented team that is well coached.”
Dan Anderson, who was one of the architects of the successful program at Mishawaka High School, is the Marian coach.
The first set was competitive as neither team had more than a three-point lead until the Knights went up 24-20 on a kill by junior outside hitter Allison Ketcham. Fairfield’s largest lead was 13-10 following a tip by senior setter Riley Troyer. Marian recorded the set point on a kill by Ketcham.
Senior Raina Troyer served two straight points early in the second set to put the Falcons up 3-1. Fairfield senior Haley Brown notched a kill to give her team that lead.
“Brown had a good match,” Herschberger said.
Brown topped the Falcons with 10 kills and three blocks in the match.
Marian quickly regained the momentum and tied the score 3-3 on a kill by Asdell. The score was tied 5-5 before the Knights went on a run, opening a 17-9 lead on the way to a second-set victory.
The Falcons led 8-7 in the third set following a kill by Riley Troyer. Fairfield’s last lead in the match was at 15-14 after a Marian serve went into the net. A Falcon serve went long to knot the score 15-15 and the Knights regained the lead for good when a Falcon kill attempt was long.
Riley Troyer had two aces to lead the Falcons. Brown and senior Ellen Line both had one.
“Our serves were not very aggressive,” Herschberger said. “Instead of being aggressive we were serving the ball right at them.”
Raina Troyer had 11 digs, senior Kaela Miller nine and Riley Troyer eight.
“I thought we hit the ball well when we passed it,” the coach said. “We did get blocked a lot. It’s hard to play a tall team like Marian. We have a hard time trying to simulate their height and talent in practice.”
